Amr Ellaithy
PostDoc
Dr. Amr Ellaithy completed his PhD in Neuroscience at Virginia Commonwealth University under the mentorship of Dr. Diomedes Logothetis, where he studied the activation of metabotropic glutamate receptors and their coupling to ion channels. He subsequently pursued clinical training in neurology and subspecialty training in epilepsy before returning to the bench as a postdoctoral researcher in the Smirnakis Lab at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he investigated cell type–specific transcriptomic dysfunction in Dravet syndrome using single-nucleus RNA sequencing. At the Farrell Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital, Amr combines his molecular and clinical background to study hippocampal microcircuit dynamics in epilepsy. Using optical imaging and high-density electrophysiology, he explores how endocannabinoid signaling regulates seizure activity and the postictal state.Clinically, Dr. Ellaithy is an Instructor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and sees patients with epilepsy at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, with a special interest in long-term neuromodulation using responsive neurostimulation (RNS). Outside the lab, he enjoys cooking and hybrid athletic training, having recently completed a HYROX event.
